I started with a bunch of purple fingerprints, I added just one yellow one and thought it gave good contrast. Then I started drawing. the yellow guy first and he had this opposition - it was either anger/defiance or fear. Then I thought, why could he be mad - maybe one of these creatures stole something of his. The rest just kind of happened.

Cyclops' Island

This is the island that Odysseus and his crew were trapped on by the cyclops, in it's cave. So it needs to be small. I explored some more realistic looking islands, but these softer shapes really spoke to me for this project.

In order to bring consistency to my children's book illustration porfolio, I've been redoing some of my pieces to become either watercolor or digitally painted. The watercolor really gives this piece some life and visual interest that the digital version did not have.

This was done for an SCBWI contest in which everyone is illustrating the scene from Chicken Little where Turkey Lurkey finds out "the sky is falling."

This is a piece in watercolor with a color pencil outline. With this type of watercolor application, I got some textures that I liked. I was thinking of Peter deSeve's work and having a fun time dabbing watercolor around. I'm going to be doing more work in this style.

I'm a fan of the old A-Team. It was predictable and awesomely bad and I loved it as a kid. The character design is really good. The four main characters are really distinct. You can tell which one your looking at at a glance. You weren't going to confuse one for another, which happens in some poorly designed shows.

Abe Lincoln - Icon

Abe Lincoln is a great character design. He was tall and accentuated that tallness with an extra tall hat. He didn't always have a beard, but once he got it, it was his forever. Tall, gaunt, bearded with no mustache, and a tall hat. That's Abe Lincoln.

Charlie Chaplin - Little Tramp - design review

Charlie Chaplin's Little Tramp was a lovable creature who was always getting into trouble. He was an icon of the silver screen. He worked very well in black and white. You could see his silhouette and know it was him. His suit was black, but worn and dusted down to a gray. His pants were too big, his shoes were too big and made him walk with his feet pointed out. He had a cane. His hat was too small and rested on his head. His suit coat was too tight. Top this off with his iconic mustache and you have the Little Tramp.

What do the clothes say about him? His clothes are the wrong size, but he wears them with pride. His tie is tight and shirt and vest are buttoned up. They say he wants to dress nicely but can't afford to get properly fitting clothes. His pose says he's comfortable with who is. His pose doesn't say he's stuffy or pretentious, but more playful. Especially with that expression.

So you know a lot about this character without him ever moving a muscle or saying a word. And that is good character design.
